FAHRA SUPPORTS EP RESOLUTION CONDEMNING EJKS IN THE PHILIPPINES.

Los Angeles—The Filipino American Human Rights Alliance (FAHRA) –Los Angeles supports the European Parliament resolution last March 16, 2017 that condemned extrajudicial killings in the Philippines and called on the government to investigate the deaths and prosecute the people responsible for them.

In a joint resolution, the EP also called on the government to release Sen. Leila De Lima, whom it described as “a human rights advocate and the highest profile critic of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign.”

The EP called for De Lima’s immediate release and said that she must be given adequate security while in detention.

De Lima, who is facing drug-related charges, must be given a fair trial, EP said, as it urged the government “to drop all politically motivated charges against her and to end any further acts of harassment against her.

END THE KILLINGS NOW, RELEASE SENATOR DE LIMA

In the resolution, the European Parliament, which is part of the European Union’s legislature, said “there are serious concerns that the offences Senator De Lima has been charged with are almost entirely fabricated.” o hand-in-hand with prevention and rehabilitation programs..

The EP also urged the European Commission “to use all available instruments to persuade the Philippines to put an end to extrajudicial killings related to the anti-drug campaign including, in the absence of any substantive improvements in the next few months, procedural steps with a view to the possible removal of GSP+ preferences.”

The GSP, or Generalised Scheme of Preferences, is a preferential tariff system that allows countries like the Philippines to export goods to the EU without paying tariffs.
