LA FILIPINOS HOLDS COMMEMORATION AT PWC-SC ON 31st EDSA ANNIVERSARY IN LA

by Steve Angeles, ABS-CBN News

LOS ANGELES — As Filipino communities marked the of the 31st anniversary of EDSA, one city saw two celebrations representing two opposing views of the historic revolution that toppled the Marcos dictatorship.

But while President Duterte’s supporters celebrate his accomplishments, other Filipino activists gathered across town, joined by local elected officials.

Some 50 lifelong activists relived their activism in Historic Filipinotown, as they prepare to fight again.  17016391_613876758806907_1487436380_o

“It’s like we’re back at EDSA again, working to get people to stand up again. It took 14 years for people stand up and overthrow the Marcos dictatorship,” said activist Carol Ojeda Kimbrough.

They worry that Senator DeLima’s recent arrest can be setting the stage for martial law.

“Duterte is bringing back the bad memories and Marcos-ian schemes like the declaration of martial law, and one step is to arrest and detain, and probably charge and convict, Senator Leila DeLima,” said activist Art Garcia.

The EDSA activists add that they’re not only ready to take their stand against President Duterte and his actions — they’re also fighting some of the executive orders by US President Donald Trump.

Pro-PDUT Rally

About a hundred President Rodrigo Duterte supporters held a rally outside the Los Angeles philippine consulate.

“This is about people power today. What we’re celebrating we’re showing our support for our current president,”  said Tina Lorenzana, Southern California Coordinator of Digong Supporters.

“31 years — Filipinos are still suffering!” said supporter Edward Duterte Abad. “That’s why I think it’s time. Because if you want to have change, you have to support our present administration — because this is our last card, that we can have another new Philippines.”

They say they are taking a stand for the Philippine president, who has been the subject of criticism…and even alleged attempted ouster plots.

“Let’s give a fair treatment to Duterte; he’s doing things never any president [has done] for the 30 years… he did everything,” said supporter Fernando Gonong. “Stop blackmailing him…he’s doing good. Again ‘yellow-tard,’ your empire is over. Your done, and give a chance to Duterte.”

The ralliers applauded the recent arrest of Senator Leila DeLima over drug charges.

“That’s only right. DeLima is not a political prisoner. She has done something wrong. Her case is a drug related case; it’s a criminal case,” said Abad. “She will be given due process.”
