Treacherous burial mocks struggle of or press freedom during Martial Law

National Union of Journalists of the Philippines
November 22, 2016

( Editor Note: On the 7th Anniversary of the infamous Maguindanao Massacre, we published the statement of the NUJP . The statement also expressed outrage of the Filipino journalists on the burial of Dictator Marcos with military honors at the LMNB with the complicity of PRRD and the reactionary Supreme Court of the Philippines.)

Los Angeles–The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) shares the Filipino people’s outrage against the treacherous burial of the remains of the dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (LnmB).

The burial mocks the life-and-death resistance of the journalists and media workers in the struggle to expand the frontiers of press freedom during the dark days of Martial Law.

While it is true that the Libingan has long been desecrated as a sacred space for the national memory, the people still cling to its intended political and social symbolism, that is, to hold in high esteem the people whose deeds reflect the values we hold dear as a society.

Marcos’ filthy record of suppressing press freedom and attacking journalists at the onset of Martial Law, and then prostituting media practice through the operation of crony news organizations is anything but deplorable.

Press freedom was among the first casualties of Marcos’ vile adventurism with political power. Martial Law not only led to mass extrajudicial murders, it also attempted to kill the truth.

Marcos ordered the closure of newspapers. His government took control of radio and television stations.

Many media workers were imprisoned, tortured and died fighting the dictatorship. Others were forced to go underground or into exile to evade arrest.

To protect and maintain his monopoly on power, Marcos allowed the operation of crony-controlled newspapers, radio and television stations whose main purpose was to air and publish the “good and beautiful” about Martial Law or the so-called “Bagong Lipunan (New Society).”

Amid the tyrannical rule, Filipino media workers continued to fight for press freedom and exposed the truth through underground newspapers and alternative news media later called the “Mosquito Press.”

These papers were secretly distributed or passed from reader to reader by hand, detailing the massive human rights violations, plunder of our economy by the Marcos family and their cronies and calling for heightened resistance. These helped in galvanizing the resistance and unity against the dictatorship leading to Marcos’ ouster on Feb. 25, 1986.

The overthrow of the dictatorship also led to the restoration of democratic institutions including the independent press.

The burial of Marcos at the hero’s cemetery seeks to gloss over, erase or worse, reverse these historical facts. This is anathema to the very essence of our role as chroniclers of our country’s contemporary history.

We stand by the people in decrying this mockery. We are one with them in ensuring that this will not happen again.

After all, it is because of the people that we exist. And it is the interest of the people that we will tirelessly serve. •

Historian: Marcos’ war exploits ‘full of lies’

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The debate rages on whether or not Ferdinand Marcos deserves a hero’s burial.PFM

President Rodrigo Duterte believes Marcos deserves a spot at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (National Heroes’ Cemetery) because he is a World War II veteran.

But the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) disagrees with the President’s decision.

A recent study by NHCP titled, “Why Ferdinand E. Marcos should not be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani” concludes Marcos’ tales of heroism are “full of lies.”

“We discovered that many of the claims made were not true,” NHCP Chairperson and Professor Maria Serena Diokno told CNN Philippines, Wednesday.

As early as 1945, Marcos was already claiming to have received three major U.S. Army medals – the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Order of the Purple Heart.

This was supposedly in recognition of his courageous efforts to repulse the advancing Japanese Forces in Bataan at the height of the World War in 1942.

Diokno, however, said the former strongman’s claims are false.

“You can actually check the website of the U.S. (United States) roster of recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, Order of the Purple Heart, and you will not see Mr. Marcos’ name among the recipients,” said Diokno.

The author verified Diokno’s claims with the said websites. His name is not present in any of the mentioned roster of awardees.

Ang Mga Maharlika

When Marcos first ran for President in 1965, he also claimed to have led a guerilla unit called Ang Mga Maharlika.

But declassified documents from the U.S. National Archives show the group was never recognized.

“They are not recommended for recognition because of the limited military value of their duties,” said Maj. R.G. Langham in a declassified letter entitled Recognition of Guerilla Unit dated May 31, 1945.

The U.S. Armed Forces also said Marcos never led such a guerilla unit.

“It is quite obvious that Marcos did not exercise any control over a guerilla organization prior to liberation,” said Capt. Elbert R. Curtis in another declassified letter.

“Quite a number of American Military officials had very, very serious doubts,” Diokno explained.

Malicious criminal act?

Marcos also listed his name on different guerrilla groups apparently to get more back pay from the U.S. government.

Many of the Filipinos who had served in the war were entitled to claim remuneration and other military benefits after the clashes ended.

“If you double list your name in different units, how many times will you claim?,” said Diokno.

A U.S. Army report concluded such is a fraudulent and malicious criminal act.

“The Americans (army officials) were quite appalled that in a number of cases, they found double listing of names. One of them said it’s a malicious criminal act,” added Diokno.

Philippine Medal For Valor

The Philippine Army, meanwhile, said even if Marcos’ claims are false, he was still a Philippine Medal For Valor awardee.

“Based on our record, he fought during World War II, wala rin kaming binabago doon[we did not change anything there],” explained Col. Benjamin Hao, Spokesperson of the Philippine Army.

A description of his medal at the Philippine Army museum said then Lieutenant Marcos “successfully reconnoitered and located the Japanese Army’s 9th infantry regiment under Col. Susumi Takechi in Bataan.”

It added, Marcos also hastily organized a company-sized blocking force that prevented the decimation of withdrawing U.S. troops and delayed the fall of Bataan.

Soldier, but never hero

Diokno said for a person to be recognized as a hero, there must be solid and unassailable evidence of her courage, honesty and integrity.

“If there is a very great doubt about somebody’s record for example, we do not use that as a basis for giving that person any kind of historical recognition,” explained Diokno.

Diokno, who is also the daughter of former senator and staunch anti-Martial Law activist Jose Diokno, said all her office can do is to present the facts to Duterte.

Professor Diokno sent the study to the chief executive’s office on July 12, hoping he would reconsider his decision of allowing a heroes’ burial for Marcos.

The NHCP embargoed the study before the public until August 5, Friday, as the President was still not giving any response.

A day after, the President confirmed he allowed Marcos’ burial at the Libingan since he was a former soldier.

For Diokno, Marcos may have been a soldier, but never a hero.

ALLIANCE CONDEMNS PRRD AS A MARCOS COPYCAT AND AS ANOTHER CONSUMATE CORRUPT POLITICIAN15036411_10155095011439453_8506618822733612125_n

Los Angeles— The Alliance Philippines or AJLPP strongly condemned PH President Rodrigo R, Duterte (PRRD) in the highest terms and hold him responsible for the burial with military honors of the Dictator Marcos at the LMNB and turning the heroes cemetery as a private cemetery for the Marcos family.

The Alliance and the Filipino American community in the United States stands with the Filipino people that cannot respect the decisions of the rotten and corrupt PRDD’s controlled Supreme Court .

That Supreme Court acted much like the Marcos Supreme Court during the 14 years of Marcos Dictatorship’s martial rule Thus, we hold it in much contempt. They might say it is legal but the question is, is it moral? They only were concerned with the letter of the law, completely disregarding the spirit of the law.

Legalistic Mumbo Jumbo

The PRRD’s Supreme Court decisions to free Juan Ponce Enrile and former President Arroyo and to bury dictator Marcos in the LMNB in complete disregard of the people and the verdict of history reeks of political opportunism and gross corruption.

PRDD and his Supreme Court cites legalistic mambo jumbo to justify their actions but they cannot escape the judgement of the people and the history. PRRD even tried to reduce to absurdity and even pass the EDSA People’s Revolution as ‘only allegations”

In his action and pronouncements, PRDD is acting like a Marcos copycat and a corrupt politician who is completely insensitive to the public and feelings of the victims of martial law.

Marcos Lover and Copycat14907603_1253283251359217_7633935336212998100_n

He even has the gall to ask for “forgiveness for Marcos” and “healing while he insults the Filipino people’s and the martial law victims and rubbed salt into their wounds.

The worst, PRRD is unashamed in bringing back Marcos unforgivable past like resurrecting the Philippine Constabulary (PC),
reviving ROTC, the failed “Masagana 99″ “Imelda’s “Green Revolution: and other Marcos project. He is even proved himself as an unabashed Marcos Lover.

The problem is the so-called “socialist” forgot what Karl Marx said, ” then history repeats itslef, the first is a tragedy, the second is a farce.”

PRRD’s rule for the next six years as a Marcos lover is truly a farce!

JFAV National Coordinator Arturo P. Garcia said. ” JFAV holds President Duterte and his armed forces and police responsible for burying the dictator at LMNB with honors. Likewise , for closing the LMNB for the Marcos family and turning it to their private use.

The Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) vehemently protest the way the Marcos-Romualdez family’s blatant move to turn the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (LMNB) as their private cemetery for the last three days.

LMNB, A Public Park,Not a Private Marcos family cemetery

JFAV believes that LMNB is essentially a public park and to deny the public of its use for one family is not only despicable but utterly disrespectful to the public who wants to visit their relatives who were buried there,”

Garcia added, “It is not enough the PRRD disregarded the public but he continues to provoke their outrage by burying Marcos with honors and denying it and now closing the LMNB for the private viewing of the Marcos family.

This a shade of a Duterte’s federalism and reign of political dynasties under his perpertual reign to come. He is acting more than Marcos I and is out-Marcosing Marcos.

JFAV condemns this PRDD partiality and Pro-Marcos puppetry and a tyrant despot. His acts are unknown in Philippine history. He is truly a dictator in the making.” Garcia ended

THE BLAME GAME

THE BLAME GAME

By Arturo P. Garcia

As usual, two contending forces in the ruling class are blaming each other for the burial of the Dictator Marcos in the National Heroes Cemetery.joma-duterte-0510-1

The Digong Duterte regime headed by Marcos lover, Rody Duterte is blaming the past administrations. particularly the Cory Aquino and the BS Aquino III Regimes for not passing a law that prohibits the burial of the dictator to that effect. Saying “the law is the law” justifies his order to bury the dictator with honors.

What is laughable is that Duterte explains the problem as “the struggle of two families”. He had just reduced Philippine history into absurdity insulting the EDSA 1 People’s Power revolution and the people’s struggle against the dictatorship.

In the process, he isulted the memory of his own mother who was a human rights advocate so diametrically opposed to Duterte fascist actuations and tendencies.

He was backed up by the decision of nine justices of the reactionary Supreme Court. By reciting platitudes of bourgeois laws that only them can understand and are unfathomable to ordinary people, they paid homage to Marcos, the dictator and revised history.

They acted as the Duterte’s Supreme Court as they have acted as the Marcos Supreme Court from 1972-1986 that warranted their being disbanded after the EDSA Revolution of 1986.

On the other hand, the yellow party led by BS Aquino III and their subalterns was right in labelling Duterte as ‘would be Hitler” for his passionate love for Marcos.

But it is no secret that Duterte has promised during the presidential campaign that he will bury Marcos in the LMNB. He has to pay his political patrons who bankrolled his campaign. His own selfish reasons and he is very coy about that. He is just being true to his promised and his word of honor.

In fact he has introduced former Senator Bongbong Marcos as “the next vice-president of the Philippines if he wins his case in the Supreme Court”. a very ominous foreboding of the things to come.

Cory Aquino and BS Aquino III missed the opportunity to erase Marcos in history. They both sat on their laurels and instead popularized Ninoy Aquino and forget to conduct an educational campaign in schools and the community about the evils of Marcos and martial law. Now they are reaping the wind of their historical neglect.

The only consistent parties who are opposed to the burial with honors of the deposed Dictator are the progressive forces led by the NDFP who brought the downfall of the dictator. They who opposed the dictatorship were always consistent from the past to the present.

The NDFP has its problems too. The problem now is they are perceived to be allied to Duterte while they are on peace negotiations .They are now tailing the legal mass movement that is against the burial of the dictator. They are playing delicate balancing act to go against and for PRRD.

Now, even former president Fidel Ramos is against the burial of Marcos in the LMNB. But it was his fault and it was he who allowed Marcos to be brought back to the Philippines and be buried in Ilocos Norte. It was also he who accomodated pro-Marcos leaders in his government as a sign of “reconciliation.”

But for me the two factions of the same ruling class is to be blame. Some will pass again the buck to the masses saying ” its a collective amnesia” in a usual act of self-flagellation as they always do.

US President Harry Truman, tired of the blame game and the usual passing the buck, famously ended the tiresome debate by saying, “the buck stops here” at his White House Oval office.

it’s time the factions in the ruling class of the Philippines admit their mistakes and end the blame game. History and the masses has judged them

They were weighed, judged and found wanting.

NDFP HITS DU30 REGIME’S DISINFORMATION ON BILATERAL CEASEFIRE

ALLIANCE NEWS
November 15, 2016

NDFP HITS DU30 REGIME’S DISINFORMATION ON BILATERAL CEASEFIRE

Los Angeles-“It’s all disinformation”

The ALLIANCE NEWS learned today that the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) peace panel member Benito Tiamzon ” decried what he called persistent disinformation from the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) that the two parties are close to signing a bilateral ceasefire agreement.”

Tiamzon was reacting to a news report published over the weekend in a Mindanao online daily quoting government peace panel chair Silvestre Bello III that both panels hope to ink a bilateral ceasefire agreement by December 10.

He denied that the two panels have been exchanging drafts on the ceasefire agreements since the resumption of the formal peace negotiations in Oslo, Norway in August 2016.

Hurdles to Peace Talks

He moreover belied Bello’s claims that the only hurdles to the forging of a bilateral ceasefire accord were technical in nature, such as coming up with common definitions of “hostile acts” and “buffer zones.”

Tiamzon said there was obviously a campaign by the GRP to drum up false news about an impending bilateral ceasefire in order to gloss over the serious obstacles put up by the GRP to the forging of a more stable ceasefire.

It was Tiamzon’s second denial in four days and the NDFP’s third rejoinder in a week to a series of news reports that have come out since November 7 that a bilateral ceasefire agreement was in the works.

Violations of Ceasefire by the AFP

Unilateral ceasefires declared by the NDFP and the GRP have remained in force since August in the absence of a notice of termination by either side.

Tiamzon stressed the improbability of signing a bilateral ceasefire agreement in the near future in the face of field reports received by the NDFP on AFP and PNP violations of their unilateral ceasefire in Cagayan, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Cordillera, Panay, Eastern Visayas and Sorsogon.

The Alliance News reported that AFP troops massed in Allacapan and Rizal Cagayan in Zinandungan Valley.

Tiamzon complained that ” soldiers have reportedly been conducting maneuvers in the guise of the government’s anti-drug campaign, Oplan Tokhang, going house-to-house and questioning residents. Instead of asking about drugs, however, the military has been interrogating residents about the New People’s Army.

Oplan Tokhang as COIN Operations In Disguise

The military has been occupying barangay halls, day care centers and even schools in Cawayan, Dimasalang and Palanas towns and have also been terrorizing the people by repeatedly conducting a census of residents in the communities.”

Tiamzon said that “with the NPA restrained from mounting offensives, the AFP and PNP continue to violate the people’s rights with impunity.” Under such conditions, even the unilateral ceasefire would prove difficult to maintain, he warned.

Tiamzon also reiterated that as of mid-November, the NDFP has not monitored any development in the GRP’s pledge to release a substantial number of political prisoners by the end of this month.

There are more than 400 political prisoners in various detention facilities nationwide, including three NDFP consultants being held at the National Bilibid Prisons. ###
