DR. JACINTO “JAY” VALENCIA

Los AngelesAS A TRIBUTE TO OUR FILAM HEROES,I AM STARTING A SERIES ON OUR COMMUNITY LEADERS

THE FOURTH COMMUNITY LEADER TO BE FEATURED IS DR. JAY VALENCIA

Dr. Jay Valencia was an exemplary Filipino-American leader. HE was a union leader as well as a community leader of Historic Filpinotown. He was a native of Pampanga province,

He started as a staff member of Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. Because of his association with Aquino and because he was a member of the Kabataang Makabayan (KM) while he was a student in MLQU, he was arrested and detained during martial law.

When he came out of detention, he continued his studies and graduate in UP taking up law. He passed the bar and served as a lawyer in his Uncle’s office in Olongapo City.

When he emigrated to the United States with his wife, he started in a non-profit organization in Boyle Heights,-the Community Service Organization (CSO) among the Latino Community.

I met him when he was the field rep to Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa in Sacramento. He was organing the Filipino-American health workers.

When Villaraigosa lost the 2000 elections for Mayor of Los Angeles, Jay joined the SEIU 99 in Los Angeles. He resisted many offers to serve the City of LA or the State and remained in the union.

He became the vice-president of legislative affairs and rose from the ranks. Later he became the highest Filipino Union leader in California as the Vice President of UHW-West.

As a deeply religious man, he became a doctor of divinity before his untimely death in 2011.

He also became the first elected Mayor of the Pilipinotown Inc.. in 2001. This organization spearheaded the declaration of Pilipintown into Historic FIlipinotown in 2002.
