THE SECOND COMMUNITY LEADER TO BE FEATURED IS DR.ROYAL “UNCLE ROY” MORALES

He is known to the community and in the academe as “Uncle Roy” . That is how they called him.

I known him even he does know me or know me personally. He started the Pilipinotown Tour known today as Historic Filipintown tour.

Our meeting was a bit unexpected. I was walking home from the SIPA Gadren when I met him together with some Asian groupat the Little Ongpin Store. I was so curious to see this group walking together so I asked him;”What is this group doing?

He answered back, “ We are doing a Pilipinotown tour. Come, join us , Lakay.” That was before I could ask another question. So he knew me. He knows I can speak Ilocano. He called me “Lakay”

So that’s how I came to join the first tour I’ve done. And from then on, I learned lot from him the tour and did some tour even when he was still alive.

Little did I knew later, I will continue his tour as a tour guide for People’s CORE when he died in 2001.

He graduated from USC. And his father was one of the founders of the Filipino Christian Church (FCC) where every tour started when he was the tour guide.

Uncle Roy was also the founder of the Search To Involve The Pilipino Americans (SIPA) –a non-profit organization in Pilipinotown in 1972. It was a product of his advocacy as a Filipino-American leader during the civil rights movement during the 1960’s

He was also the advocate for the use of word “P’ instead of “F” in the United States to accentuate Pilipino-American community empowerment.

He wrote two books on community empowerment,”MAKIBAKA 1” and “MAKIBAKA 2”
