“SO LOW, MORE THAN THE DESIRED RESULTS”

Los Angeles—Despite the fact that the OAV voting was a record in the United States with more FilAms participating than the past elections, Philippine Ambassador Jose Cusia was not satisfied with the results of the last elections.

Why? Particularly in Los Angeles where the largest concentration of Filipinos is, Los Angeles has the lowest voters turn-out with more than 8,000 votes out of the 54,000 registered OAV.

The main reason with the low turn-out is the fact the Philippine Consulate did not do an aggressive education and OAV outreach for the may 9 elections.

Lack of Aggressive Outreach

Unllike during the time of CG Mary Aragon, Barbers and Dan Espiritu, the present Congen Lim was not as aggressive. He is more engrossed with high society affairs and big business outreach than community outreach.

We remember the Congen who came from Chicago who said, ”just come and drop-by the office and let talks over a cup of coffee” when he first came to LA. But later, whenever we dropped by his office, he is elsewhere.

The Congen also micro-manage the Consulate. The media is hard up to interview him or his staff at the consulate. Their typical answer when interviewed is that –“ talk to the Congen.”

Very different from his predecessor who spent time with the media and are focused on OAV outreach during their term.LA Filams feels he is “suplado” or he is unapproachable.

OAV: Systemic Problem

Well, Congen Lim terms will end by June 30. But we cannot blame him for the low-turn out of the OAV voting in Los Angeles. The problem is more systemic. The problem is beyond Congen Lim.

If we will just hang on the patriotism of Filams, we cannot blame Filipinos from far away Texas, Nevada,Arizona and New Mexico to come to Los Angeles just to vote. Much as we cannot rely on the mailing system of the crisis wracked US Postal Service.

The DFA and Amb.Cusia must lear from this debacle. With high registration, it is not commensurate tto the low turn out of voting for the OAV’s in this country.

As Steve Angeles of Balitang America pointed out in his report, “ Its so low, more than the desired result.”
