Ricky Lee Film Festival in Los Angeles, April 6-27,2016

Ricky Lee Film Festival, 2016

FILM SHOWING ON APRIL 6, 2016 at LAEMMLE NoHo7.
Los Angeles— Sid Balatan, the Ricky Film Festival Director-General said, ” I am strongly endorsing this Filipino classic film HIMALA to all my friends residing in Los Angeles, CA.”
Himala was voted by the international television network CNN as the best Asian film of all time. The film reflects the socio-cultural underpinnings why the Philippines, the second most progressive country in Asia in 1960s, spiraled down to where we are today, reeling in poverty and desolation.
This is a must see movie for the 2nd generation FilAms.
The showing is part of the 4-film Ricky Lee Film Festival. April 6 is the show date at 7 pm, Wednesday, Laemmle NoHo 7. Please enlarge the poster below for more details. Or call 818-903-6602.

KUNG HINDI MAN DAPAT, “HUWAG MO AKONG PIKUNIN” ( Pasingtabi sa Noli Me Tangere o Huwag mo Akong Salingin)

H’wag mo akong pikunin (don’t pick on me!)!

Huhuhu (cry cry cry!) Hindi kita inaano! (I am not annoying you!)

LA FILAM LEADERS PAYS TRIBUTE TO SENATOR JOVITO SALONGA

LA FILAM LEADERS PAYS TRIBUTE TO SENATOR JOVITO SALONGA

The Titans of the Philippine Senate, 1946-1972Los Angeles” Senator Jovito Salonga, The best President the Philippines never had.”

Scores of Filipino American leaders in Southern California paid tribute to the departed Senate President, Senator Jovito “Jovy” Salonga who died last March 10, 2016 and was buried last March 17, 2016 in Pasig, Rizal, Philippines.

In a memorial ceremonies was held at the Manila Terrace Social Hall, the event was led by TALAKAYAN leaders, Arturo P.Garcia, Sid Balatan and Dr. Orlando Cagampan last March 17, 2016 before the TALAKAYAN SA KAPIHAN SA HFT.

Memorial Services For Salonga

The memorial service was opened by Fr. Eric Ong Veloso who gave the benediction at the start of the memorial service.

Dr. Veronico Agatep said, “I was his campaign manager when he ran for President with the Liberal Party (LP) in Cagayan Valley during the 1992 Presidential election.

He was a simple, down to earth politician. Even when many deserted him during the campaign, he remained decent. I never saw such individual. He was really the best President never had.”

Arturo Garcia of JFAV also said, “ Senator Salonga is the pillar of the LP. He gave way to Mrs. Cory Aquino in 1985 to be the candidate of the opposition to maintain unity in their ranks against Marcos.

Salonga, The Methodist Leader

TALAKAYAN SA KAPIHAN SA HFT

I first knew Jovy Salonga when he campaigned as a congressman in 1965 and won over a rich competitor-warlord Rufino Antonio in Rizal. He won despite the odds supported by the common people. And then when he ran as Senator, we also campaigned for him.”

Sid Balatan added, “Salonga was a Methodist lay leader. He is deeply religious and practiced what he preached. We pay tribute to his being simple and a decent political leader. We will never forget him for his contributions for the overthrow of Marcos and martial law’

Meanwhile. Mylah De Leon, a journalist remembers, “ Salonga has a good rapport with the media. He will always meet us at his Pansol Resort and regale us with political discussions and good music.”

Ricky Lee Festival Press Conference

On the other hand, Al Aquino stated, “ Salonga is a good leader, but he has his failings too. While the PCGG Commissioner, his relatives and some Aquino cronies took advantage and made themselves rich during the sequestration of Marcos assets. But this does not demean his status as a good leader.

He was one of the victims of the bombing at Plaza Miranda in 1971. He exposed Senator Ninoy Aquino and CPP leader Joma Sison as the perpetrators of the Plaza Miranda bombing on August 21, 1983. “

After the tribute, Sid Balatan proceeded to conduct the press conference of the Ricky Lee Festival in Los Angeles on April 6-27, 2016.

Four vintage Ricky Lee films, :Himala'; “Karnal”, “Anak” and “Dubai” will be shown as Laemmlle NOHO 7 at 5240 North Holywood , CA 91601 from April 6 to 27, 2016

LOS ANGELES— ” Tuloy ang laban para sa mga beterano!”

After a year-long hiatus, the Justice for Filipino American Veterans (JFAV) with Kabataang maka-Bayan or KmB, Pro People Youth and Ugnayan Youth for Justice and Social Change lobbied at the US Congress in Washington, D.C. for the Filipino Veterans Fairness Act, or HR 2766, from Monday, February 29th to Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016.

The lobby group was led by Eddy M. Gana Jr. and Phylizia Carrillo of KmB-Los Angeles, Terrenze Reinton of Ugnayan Youth-New York, and Arturo P. Garcia of JFAV and members of Samahang Pilipino of UCLA.

The lobbyists visited more than 45 Representatives in the House of Representatives (HOR) from February 29th to March 1st, 2016. They have a formal one on one meetings with 15 house deputies in the span of two days. Two additional representatives co-sponsored HR 2766 bringing the number of co-sponsors to 38, with 15 other representatives strongly considering the bill.“Out of 43,000 who applied for the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund, 24,000 were denied in 2009. Today with only 20,000 veterans left in the US and Philippines, we are fighting for full equity.” Carrillo said.
22 Years of Lobbying
JFAV Visit at Rep.Jackie Speier office, MArch 01, 2016
“Every year, we organize the Justice for Filipino American Veterans March in Los Angeles to educate and inspire the youth. When students ask us when the next one will be, it is bittersweet to say next year. For 15 years, we have marched demanding full recognition for our veterans and their families,” KmB’s  Eddy Gana said.At the end of the lobby days on March 2nd, the group visited the office of Rep. Jackie Speier of California and gave her legislative assistant Josh Connolly, several updates about their lobbying efforts.“Even Rep. Speier is frustrated on the development of the HR 2276. This is one of the frustrations of the congresswoman,” Connolly said during the briefing.“We will press on until we get what we want. And that is justice and benefits for our veterans and widows,” Garcia stressed.

Los Angeles –Thank you to Christopher Bennet for taking the time to consider H.R. 2766 (Filipino Veterans Fairness Act) on behalf of Minnesota representative Tim Walz.

With Rep. Tim Wells staffer, Bennett with the JFAV:KmB Lobbyist, Marc 01, 2016From 250,000 who served to 15,000 still living in the U.S. and Philippines, this decreasing number of WWII Filipino-American veterans “fortunately” will not hinder the budget.
